Sooo sleepy….

In late 2003 or early 2004, somewhere thereabouts, I moved one of my Web sites from one server to another. In the process of doing that, I neglected to move, and therefore lost, a large number of images I had put on the server in order to embed them into my LiveJournal, with the result that many LiveJournal posts I made between 2001 and 2004 that contained images showed broken image placeholders.

Last night, while I was digging through the closet in preparation for packing stuff up, I found a couple of CDs from 2002 and 2004 that contained backups of a lot of my digital photography–including images that I thought I’d lost forever.

So I spent a great deal of time last night going through LJ entries from 2002, 2003, and 2004, identifying entries with broken image links, finding the images on the CDs, and re-uploading them to the server. Almost all of my LJ posts from mid-2003 through the present day have now been fixed and the images are now displaying correctly.

Took until 3 AM, and I’m still not finished with 2001 and 2002.

It was interesting going through the CDs, though. Many of the images which I’d thought were gone forever were from the most turbulent time in my entire life, and it’s been interesting how those images have brought back a lot of very complex memories and emotions. I’m really, really, really glad I found these CDs.

  1. *huge suzmonster hugs* to help with the memories. that’s precisely why i don’t like photos in general, i don’t want to revisit the past. i won’t even reread my journal from years past. too painful. just give me a good novel with heart wrenching unrequited love and i’m good. that’s enough feeling for me.

  3. Happy Birthday!

Very cool to find things you thought were lost and the memories unlocked! That’s always neat! Even when it’s turbulent, it usually helps you realize how far you’ve come and remember the “lessons” in each moment.

  5. That’s why I’m so compulsive about documenting my own life. I think it’s very beneficial to be able to go back through the past and take a look at the person I used to be, even when those memories are painful … especially when those memories are painful.

I, also, lost a hard drive full of photos and there is a section of time that was not backed up on CD. I’m still hoping to find someone who can access that drive and recover some of that data. I’m finally getting around to building a “backup system” because, although I know better, I have never made regular backups of my data.

  7. *grins* Now I’m going to have to go back and reread those years! Because even if the links were still working when I read most of your journal in 2005 – It sounds like something I would enjoy doing when I am missing you. I would love to see the images you recovered and learn why they were important to you. Similarly, I would like to scan and upload life-representative pictures of the albums I have here and perhaps attach image descriptors and explanations – and blog them!

I’m so happy you survived another revolution around the sun. *tightest squeeze*

  9. This is why whenever I link to anything in LJ on my own site, I put it in a special subfolder — which makes it interesting to look through that folder (www.gushi.org/lj/) and wonder what the hell I was talking about at that point.

I’ve also been interested in making a system whereby the EXTERNAL links I place are cached as well, so that what I post can still be contextually referenced if a domain or something goes thhhhhtp.
