    • Nooo! Gutsy is an Ubuntu distro. This is Gentoo. 🙂

Seriously, though, what’s scary is that I don’t have root access to this box, so I can’t do squat. We brought in an outside contractor to set it up, and he never gave anyone else root, on the theory (silly as it is) that if we had root and did something to screw it up, we’d have to hire him to fix it. Now we have to hire him to…well, to do anything, really.

I’ve made the case for this being a Really Dumb Thing(tm), but so far without success.

I’d have booted into single user mode and changed it personally. Third party contractor with root access on a corporate resource *not controlled by corporate* is … madness.

And I *am* a contractor. As a responsible contractor eager to cover my butt, I’d have also disabled direct root logins and ensured the use of both sudo and rootsh, and cranked up the logging (preferably to a separate syslog server).

That’s just me though. I don’t believe in crippling customers since I know how to cover both their butts and mine at the same time.

  1. For the naysayers…

My Mac OS X development test machine. (Runs automated unit and qualification tests)

    [sryder:~] swryder% uptime
    14:36 up 852 days, 1:01, 2 users, load averages: 1.04 1.11 1.15
    [sryder:~] swryder%

    And I don’t even hold the record…..

        Panther – 10.3.4 (7H63)

Testing low layer stuff so it just needs the UNIX layer. The GUI does not do anything. Yeah, no security patches but since it runs headless not to worried about it. Guess I should be a good citizen and update to TIger or something.

Basically a place to dump those long running tests that churn for days than then report “OK” or “FAIL”
