How to turn a $2,000 computer into a $600 computer…
Get a brand-new, dual-processor Apple G5 system for Christmas. Decide you’d rather have a PC. Rip the motherboard out of the case and throw it away. Put in a cheap Athlon motherboard in its place.
This guy is definitely going to hell.

what.the.fuck?!?
seriously.. I’m a PC user, and even I would never do that to a G5. I’d use it for video production.
but damn… I’d backhand someone for doing that.

On the other hand, the Apple G5 was not only his property but also inanimate, so there isn’t a question of obtaining consent. Therefore, while his kink is not my kink, his kink is still okay.
It occurs to me to add, “… his property, *not a unique, irreplaceable item*, …”.

But…but…what about all the poor kids in India who have no computer at all? Think of the children! 🙂

Well, he actually gave all the G5 parts to a friend with a G3, who will probably be able to assemble an ugly but fast Mac from it. So his friend is happy, and presumably, he’s happy, too, just stupid.
Although he turned a $3000 computer into a $600 one, not a $2000 computer. But hey, now it can run Windows XP! My G5 can’t do that. (Granted, my G5 can’t burst into flame on command either, which would be only slightly less useful to me than running Windows XP would be.)

I’m skeptical; the logic board from a G5 is too large to fit in a G3 case, and it would require a great deal of skill to get it to cool properly even if it did fit.
I suspect what he gave his friend was a headache and a lot of frustration, but not, ultimately, a working G5 computer at all.
Unless the friend mounted the G5 in… a generic white-box PC case!
[Cue “Psycho” theme music]
Wow. That’d require some very sneaky cooling. He’d also have to dig up an appropriate power supply somewhere. I’m not 100% convinced that putting a G5 in a PC case is any less of an engineering challenge than putting one in a G3 case.
Still, it’d be hella cool to have a plain beige PC box with a G5 in it…

While I respect his right to do with his property what he wants and to make his own decisions about his life, like others here, I also hope he burns in hell for it.
Free will and responsibility are double-edged swords you know…

Ah, but it’s frequently easier, rather than dealing with the parents. Just imagine waking up, having your parents beaming down at you as you unwrap what is *obviously* a computer box… and seeing an Apple.
And he did say that they possess not even a clue as far as computers go.
I believe Gord from Acts of Gord has something to say in the Book of Annoyances about people who’d rather buy a new game rather than get their friend to return the one said friend stole. All to avoid annoying or pissing off said “friend.”

Oh yah. I should mention that I also think the kid needs a good seeing-to with the Mighty Greatsword Cluebringer.
