Ugh yuck.

Spent the entire afternoon at the doctor’s office today, on account of this nasty hacking coughing yuck that I’ve had for the last three weeks and that has been hanging on like an uninvited house guest. I was swabbed, poked, prodded, X-rayed, poked some more, and several people looked at me and said “hmm” a lot.

After hours of poking, swabbing, prodding, X-raying, and “hmm”ing, the diagnosis is: antibiotic-resistant pneumonia.

Fuck me dead.

The doctor is taking it seriously and treating it aggressively. My kitchen counter now looks like I knocked over a pharmacy. Two different steroids, two different antibiotics, one shot in the ass (that burns like a motherfucker), an inhaler, industrial-strength cough medicine, some foul-tasting bright-orange pills that I don’t even know what they are, two different OTC cough medicines and expectorants that my doctor suggested, and another appointment to go in next week for further evaluation. Hundred and seven bucks for all the prescriptions, and my insurance paid more than twice that.

Apparently it’s going around. Doctor told me I was the third case of antibiotic-resistant pneumonia she’d seen today. Ye gods.

You know it’s bad when you’ve been too sick even to be horny.

  1. SHIT!!!

My sympathies — I’ve been quite ill recently, but yours takes the cake. Here’s hoping that all the meds will knock it out quickly and with minimal lingering effects.

    *hugs*

  3. Best of wishes on getting better. A thought, since you say the health professionals have said it’s antibiotic-resistant … it might be helpful to ask what bacteria you’ve managed to pick up, if you are curious and they did not specify.

As someone who lives with a handful of these horrendous pains-in-the-arse … Best wishes for a speedy recovery! If you want something to be thankful for: be thankful you can (hopefully) get by on oral antibiotics, they are much simpler than dealing with IV cocktails.

  5. Holy Crap. 🙁

I hope all that Napalm in a Bottle does the trick on it. That’s some nasty stuff right there.

…though, the foul tasting bright orange pills sound like vitamin C.

I really hope they wipe that crap out of your system.

  7. I’m glad to hear that your doctor is treating it aggressively. Don’t hesitate to go back to the doc if you don’t improve ASAP. I know too many people who have landed in the hospital with this one.

*hug* I hope you get to feeling better soon!

  9. Oh your poor, poor thing! I am glad that your doc is treating it aggressively, as pneumonia is nothing to fuck around with. Just remember to take ALL your pills–there’s nothing like not finishing a course of antibiotics to breed more resistant bacteria.
I take it sushi is right out, but Dennis and I could stop by to say hi/bring food/entertain you if you’re feeling up to it before Saturday.

  11. Oh, that’s bad. Well at least you don’t have a case of antibiotic resistant bacterial meningitis. A friend of mine had that and got 3 days in the ICU on a 3 antibiotic IV cocktail. I think they pulled out the vancomyocin on it’s ass.

  13. Ack! That’s nasty stuff Franklin, so I’m glad your docs are hitting it hard! Rest as much as you can – well, you probably know the drill.

I hope you’re well enough to make it out to the Left Coast as planned!

  15. Thank you. I have been fighting aching limbs and a bad cough after a cold for weeks now, this has finally persuaded me to go to the urgent care today. My husband has been nagging me for a while to go, (Even more since my chest started to whistle and crackle a few days ago) but I’m stubborn, thought it was just a cold to fight through.
I guess seeing the potential for serious harm has tipped the scales!

Update later when I get home, but thank you for sharing your life, it might just be the reason I don’t spend New Year in hospital.

  17. OMG…. that’s scarey stuff! I went to lots of seminars on stuff like that, back when I did research biology at CDC.

    Hope you feel better soon!!!

Get your butt to a hospital if it gets significantly worse! And there’s always old standbys of chicken soup, Vitamin C in large doses, and Echinacea/Goldenseal. The C and herbs really do help with my colds/flus.

  19. Poor Franklin! *hug*
You are taking a leave from work, I hope? Have a good rest and get well! If I were near, I’d make you my version of chicken soup (chicken legs, noodles, potatos… yum) but being on the opposite side of Earth, I can only send hugs and best wishes!

  21. Ouch!

I can sympathize with how sucky it is to be sick, how ever I’ve lucked out and only caught a small cold and gotten rid of it. Best of luck, drink green tea and honey… I’ve always found it helps… as long as it doesn’t interact with your meds.
