Well, that was fun.

David and I got nailed on the way home from work today. We were stopped at a light, a guy came flying through and plowed into the side of David’s car. Wham, bang, both cars totaled.

Nobody was hurt, but the cops took the driver of the car that hit us off in handcuffs. He doesn’t speak English and had no license or ID. What’s left of David’s car got scraped up off the road (I mean that literally; they dragged it onto a flatbed with the wheels locked) and is off at some place somewhere waiting for some insurance company to do whatever it is they do.

So. Everyone’s fine, but that will make transportation to and from Dragon*Con a bit more interesting this weekend.

  1. Oh my god.
I’m glad you two are ok.
I hope that they’ll be able to do something to get him a new car.
That’s horrible that the guy just plowed into you guys.

  3. I’m glad you’re okay! And, um, soft tissue injuries like muscle strains and whiplash can take a while to show up, so please be careful and consider seeing a doctor if you’re hurting badly tomorrow or Thursday.

  5. What Janetmiles said. Don’t ignore the little aches over the next couple days. This is when to learn from others experience.
How does your insurance work down there for unlicensed drivers?

betcha someone will offer to come pick you up, since i know atlanta doesn’t have buses or taxis

glad you guys are okay. i hope the insurance doesn’t give him a big hassle. they always low-ball the offer first, but he can research on kbb.com and carmax and stuff, and may be able to get them to up their first offer by showing that he can’t buy the same car in the same condition for what they claim was the value.

Actually, Atlanta has an AWESOME transportation system, called MARTA that includes a lightrail type train and buses. And it goes right by the D’con site. I used it to get to work at the convention center for over a week last time I stayed with . Since they’re all staying at the hotel for the duration, there isn’t any worry about travel back and forth and potentially missing the last train of the evening.

However, I’m sure someone can help with a car ride, so even the inconvenience of travelling with con-gear on a train won’t be an issue.

  9. I’m really glad to hear that you’re okay – but you both should still go to the doctor. That kind of shock to the system can be terribly damaging and not show up for days.

::hugs:: I hope Dragon*Con is awesome for you, though. 🙂

  11. 🙁 Talk about bad timing! But I am very glad you’re both okay. I also think you should stop by the doctor and have him take a look at you, just to be safe.
*big hugs* Hope this doesn’t put too much of a dent in your Dragon*Con plans.

  14. I throw in my vote for getting checked out tomorrow before D’con – your back and neck will probably start feeling sore after you wake up, tomorrow evening at the latest.

  16. Wow! Ouch! I second joreth get the body parts looked at thing. It can be hard to judge injuries right after things occur as all the adrenaline in your system can mask sore or stretched body parts. Waking up today you should have a better idea what is really banged up. Further if you go to the doctor they can get ya all sorts of good things if you are a bit hurt anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants for the win man!

  18. I’m glad you are both OK… that is the important thing cars can be replaced. Usually you don’t feel the soreness until the adrenaline wears off totally in about 24 hours so make sure if you do feel something you get checked. Also… see if he has insurance if he does then they should provide you with a replacement vehicle while you are looking for another car and they should give you the book value of your car so if you’ve had any major work done or put new tires on it or things like that mention it as they need to add to the value for that. Sorry I’m being long winded but it’s what I do for a living, insurance that is and I also just went through something similar with a drunk driver. If you have any questions I can try to help but I’m not licensed outside PA and NY. Good luck and take care.

  20. Good to know you’re ok. As much as I hate doctors myself, it’s a good thing to get checked out to make sure there’s no lasting injury.

As for the other driver, I’m not surprised at the lack of English, license or insurance. Ever since Katrina we’ve had a large abundance of the same kind of driver. Even before we had problems with uninsured drivers to the point where uninsured motorist covering is required to be part of a policy at signing.
