Um, yeah.

So a while ago, both dayo and joreth reported they’d found some typos in the sex ideas section of my Symtoys Web site.

Yesterday, I ran a spell checker on the entire site–first time I’ve ever done that.

More than 200 typos and misspelled words later… Yeah, so my typing sucks. Oy!

I’ve noticed a distinct pattern to my typos, though. The most common typo I make is a dropped letter, like “dsappoint” instead of “disappoint” (for some reason, I drop vowels and the letter H more often than any other letters), and transposed letters (oyu instead of you, hte instead of the). I can type about 90 words a minute, but I never learned to touch type; it’s 90 words a minute of hunt-n-peck.

I wonder if it’s too late to learn to type properly. I’d have to unlearn literally 30 years of bad habits.

  1. I find myself touch-typing for brief periods if I don’t realize I’m doing it. Once I notice that I haven’t been looking, it’s like when Wiley E. Coyote notices he’s run off the edge of the cliff.

I never type with my hands in the official home position, though. I’ve tried it a few times, and it always hurts.

  3. well if it helps I seem to do the same thing.

adn, teh, yuo. for me a lot has to do with the sensitivity of the keys, the more I use them the less sensitive they become. might explain the leaving out the vowels.

I only type 45-60 wpm, but I can only do that while looking at the keys.

  5. I’d suggest a trial period.

I typed about 50-60 wpm as a kid with hunt and peck, and later learned “touch typing” using a typing-tutor arcade game. I just added it rotation with other games during gameplaying time and did it when it felt like fun. I don’t think I spent a lot of time on it. The hard part was remembering not to do it the “old” way. It certainly gave me a boost in both speed AND accuracy and didn’t take that long (though it was disappointingly slow at the beginning).

Why not dedicate a half hour a day to it for 10-20 days, and see how you feel about it then? Check out Popcap’s Typer Shark.

  7. I cannot recommend learning to touch type strongly enough. I had the incredible good fortune of taking Typing in high school, and it has served me better than any other single class I’ve ever taken. You have the mental agility to break bad habits, so I don’t think that would be anything more than a minor stumbling block for you.

In your case however, given that the incubation period for the mycocytes that unknowingly transferred to you the last time you saw her is less than a month, and the neurological damage that they cause is irreversible, I’d suggest focusing your energies on learning the method that Stephen Hawking uses to type instead. 😉

  9. I never learned to touch type either. U did “hunt & peck” for the longest time. Then I learned to sort oof type with one hand… then two… but I still catch myself using one hand a lot.

  11. My son taught himself the “Dvorak” keyboard layout. I tried it and couldn’t adapt. You’re young enough that you might be able to do it. Why don’t you give it a try?

    • Second Dvorak if you can take two to three weeks of slow tying, not only is it just a more sensable way to type (decreasing RSI injuries and impoving speed) using a whole new layout might be better in addressing the pattern of movements that results in the letter dropping that is annoying you.

  14. I find that the most common typo I make is just forgetting to type the second word of a sentence completely. This is especially true when I’m IMing. I think it’s because my mind is working faster than my fingers and I jump straight to the third word after typing the first.

its never too late to learn. i cant believe you huntNpeck at a rate of 90wpm! i touch type about 90+wpm too! you must be blazing to huntNpeck at that speed! people often make fun of me because i carry on complete and lengthy face-to-face conversations while typing at a smokin’ speed and never losing eye contact with the person or persons speaking. they test me by asking me off-topic questions because they think i am not listening and i rarely miss a beat! i hear frequent giggles from coworkers as they pass by my office because of the rapid-fire “tapping” of the keyboard eminiating from my office. i would highly recommend learning to touch type because it frees up part of your mind and your eyes as well 😉 p.s. i transpose frequesntly also….
