“Nothing is worse than having an itch you can never scratch!”

That’s a line from the movie Blade Runner. The replicant Leon says this to the main character Deckard, just before attempting to smash his face in.

A few days ago, I woke up with an itch I couldn’t scratch. I can put a name to this particular itch, and that name is David. And no, it’s not what you’re thinking. Pervs.

In the past, you see, I have never liked sushi. I’ve been taken to sushi places in four major cities on both sides of the continent, and I’ve come to the considered and well-researched conclusion that sushi sucks. This conclusion has been assailed by a number of people over the yers, but subsequent experimentation has always left that conclusion intact.

I have a friend and coworker who is quite passionate about sushi, and he decided he’d be the latest to take a tilt at the windmill. So he invited me to a sushi place in Buckhead which is, he assured me, the best sushi he’s yet discovered.

And a chorus of angels sang on my tastebuds.

I can even tell you, gentle reader, the exact moment it happened. It was the lava roll that did it. I felt as a person who’d spent his entire life seeing only in black and white had suddenly been granted color vision, and his first sight upon being gifted this wondrous new thing was Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night.

And so, just before New Year’s, when Shelly and Brenden and Taj were in town, we all joined David once more at this same sushi place for dinner. Lo, there was much sushi, and lo, it was all consumed. Then, after this orgy for the mouth, we went to see the new cut of Blade Runner. It was, truly, a Perfect Evening.

Nothing is worse than having an itch you can never scratch!

And now, gentle readers, that itch keeps returning. Before, when I lived in night, I never craved sushi; but now that I have sampled its wonders, the craving is upon me from time to time, without warning, and always when I have no immediate way to satisfy it.

I can only imagine that the long-suffering, tireless testament to the human spirit, Paris Hilton, must have felt something similar when her grandfather (and controller of the Hilton fortune) decided to pledge the entire vast empire to charity upon his death, cheating her of a $2.3 billion inheritance. I do not miss that $2.3 billion, for I never knew its charms, but the lamented Ms. Hilton must surely feel some of the same pain I feel now. Before I knew sushi, I could never miss it; and before she knew drunken million-dollar spending sprees, she could never miss them, either.

But my itch is, I think, easier to scratch.

  1. Oooh, was it MF Sushibar that you went to? Because that is some GOOD sushi. Their lunch buffet is fantastic.
I am glad you have discovered the joys of sushi. When it’s good, it’s very, very good. But when it’s bad, it’s horrid. ^_^ (And may have you puking for the next 24 hours.)

    • The Lava Roll is a combination of one part heavenly choir and one part orgiastic bliss. It’s like an exotic stranger in a dimly-lit room, leaning close to you and whispering in your ear hints and suggestions of dark carnal secrets barely dreamed of, while your hands…

Oh, sorry, you meant describe what it’s made of. 🙂 It’s shrimp tempura, tuna, avocado, and cucumbers, with a mildly spicy topping.

  3. If you’re ever in downtown ATL, Pacific Rim has some incredible sushi. It’s in the Suntrust Building, next door to the Mariott Marquis. Of course they also have some pretty incredible things on the menu that are not sushi, so it’s a safe bet for a larger party or a date whose sushi status is unknown.

  5. Ooh, do tell! My favorite delivery sushi is Ta Tong Thai and Sushi, for in person (in my ‘hood) I like Tank, and for really premium fare I like Japponais.

  6. I get my sushi cravings too and used to eat it at least once a week, but have gotten to keeping it a treat and not a treatment.

Hats off to Conrad for keeping the old school tradition of philantopic disperal of the empire instead of funding a dillitant’s indulgences

Yep. In a roundabout way, ol’ Paris may have just done more for charitable causes than anyone else of her generation. And she only had to end up naked on the Internet to do it!

  8. Ah yes. A feeling I know well.

The sushi place that sparked my addiction is somewhere near to Portland, Oregon. I am currently living about 7,000 miles away from there, in Cork, Ireland.

This is… problematic, when the Itch strikes.

  10. welcome to the world of fresh fish and wasabli…. I have been a convert fro amny years – a well choen chunk of tuna that melts in your mouth to be followed by the zing of the wasabi and diing sauce… not to mention the 101 other delights a good sushi chef can assail your taste buds and imagination with (yes i know ending a sentence in a prepostion… bitch)

I miss living in Sydney where the introduction of automated sushi rollers has meant that what costs $6-$8 else where is $2-$3… sushi snacks on the way home from the train station were a must!

As a result my kids all eat nori by the sheet quite happily without the rice filling 😉

      • not vendors, but more like a small production line – hand rolling is more expensive and takes skill – the machines roll cosistently and the resulting product can be produced very cheaply – this is then delivered in bulk to the small outlets around town… prepackaged and ready for sale…. results in a more limited range of generally available product but as a healthy snack food it cant be beat!

you can stilll go to the restaurants and get hand rolled or hand made/arranged sushi and sashimi and all the other yummy things that come form the Japanese cooking tradition.

  12. Welcome to the dark side. We have sushi. And lava rolls are generally awesome.

BTW, I finally got around to listening to my Polyamory Weekly files from long, long ago when you were guesting; great interview!

  14. Having had sushi from both ends of the spectrum, I can understand how that can come about. I’m fortunate enough, in that regard, to work near Newport, Rhode Island, home of the Black Ships Festival, where even the take-out sushi can be exquisite (Sushi-Go is actually better than the local restaurants I’ve been to). Sushi really can’t be graded on a scale from one to ten; it needs several orders of magnitude and definitely fractional values, perhaps even irrational numbers. It’s intricate. – ZM, who now wants Japanese for lunch (though not sushi, oddly – unadon sounds really good right now)

  16. Hahah, finally I get to be happy for my utter lack of taste.

I can eat Publix sushi and be quite happy, thank you. (Publix = the local supermarket.)

In fact, I had some just last night. Spicy Tuna roll…delicious! (Or at least, *I* thought so.)

  18. My master is going to get me that EnJoy Pleasure Wand for christmas (we’re exchanging gifts when we get back to school) and I was wondering how to do temperature play. What is the most effective way (hot and cold).

    Thank you!
    Kourtney

    • A container of hot water and a container of ice water both work quite well. The wand changes temperature quickly, so you can even alternate between hot and cold. One trick that another person mentioned recently is starting with the wand at room temperature, using it for penetration, waiting for it to warm up to body temperature, and then using it on the clit–where it will feel burning hot.

  20. I live in a Korean neighbourhood. There are tons of Korean-Japanese crossover restaurants who do both sushi and that amazing Korean comfort food of soups and stews and various things served in hot stone bowls. It’s like being a crackhead who somehow stumbles into the police evidence room. Most women fantasize about chocolate. I fantasize about a huge bowl of crispy salmon skin and a hot buttery slab of unagi.

    • …and damn you, now I know what I’ll be thinking about for the rest of the day…

Until recently, the idea of eating eel sounded disgusting, but reality of eel is so tasty!
