A while ago, I wrote about an outfit called a2b2.net, which was hosting a number of phony PayPal and bank sites designed to dupe people into giving up their financial information.
A short time later, that particular server went offline, only to come back a few days later as a site that sold and distributed software for hacking Web servers and setting up phony bank and PayPal sites.
Well, now things take a turn for the strange. It appears that Web host has been hacked, and every Web site running on the entire Web host has been wiped.

Yeah, and what are they going to do about it? “Help! Police! Someone stole my illegal heroin stash! Help me get it back!” As Paypal is one of the things that I rely on for my livelihood, I’m hoping it was a fed up Government Agency or Net Vigilante giving them what they deserve and not some other crime syndicate taking out a competitor.
I would not be surprised to learn they were destroyed by the same criminals they hosted. Pity about the people caught in the crossfire, though.
*nod* I have always heard that defense attorneys actually get more death threats from the people they defend then do prosecuting attorneys from the people they prosecute

I’m not sure I’d call this “justice”. Of the 100,000 Web sites that were destroyed, only a relative handful were involved in criminal activities.
The fact that a2b2 knowingly and deliberately hosted Web sites for organized crime makes me have no sympathy whatsoever for them, and it’d suit me fine if this incident drives them out of business, but all the legitimate people hosting there didn’t deserve it.
I have a friend who used to work for Rus and I also was once hosted with him (which he subsequently removed without warning me, so I lost some unique data), so I’ve always taken an active interest in anything to do with Rus’ companies. All I can say is that it makes me glad that I’m no longer hosted with him! One for them being hacked and two due to the illicit activities. Although my faith in him was somewhat low to begin with, this just brings it home that he was really dodgy all along.
Even if he wasn’t aware of the scam sites, I still don’t really trust him overall.

I know he has a2b2 up, possibly VAServ, but if I recall, I was hosted by CheapVPS. I just checked the domain (cheapvps.co.uk) and I get a 502 error, so I figure it’s not been restored. It just makes me think that if I were still with him, I’d have lost my websites.
