I used to find him really funny, until I saw him live, where he went from funny to beyond offensive – really, really horrible commentary on rape (she deserved it) and suicide. The woman next to me actually broke out in sobs at one point and had to leave. I pretty much lost all respect for him after that.
I would call myself far from easily offended, but frankly he just wasn’t even funny. The audience was dead quiet (except for the sobbing of a couple women in the audience). Maybe he was trying out unsucessful new material, but either way it was bad bad bad.

Ahhh, gotta love Carlin. My dad was a big fan of him and it was the first comedian I ever really got into. I recall when I was like 11 or 12 maybe, he was in town the same night as David Copperfield. I wanted to go see Carlin, but we ended up going to see Copperfield instead because my parents didn’t want to be embarassed 🙂
I also remember the time in College where I went to see him with some friends of mine. Carlin did a routine on abortion that was still a work in progress. It was far more abusive and angry than funny. Did I mention one of the guy I was there with was the head of the right to life organization on campus? Awwwwwkward 🙂
He’s definitely faded with age. Far more cynical than funny and much of his routine is a rehash of former work, but he still has his moments.

Ah, one of my favorite concerts, 1987. The T-shirt read, “Simon Says: Go Fuck Yourself.” I wore that sucker until it was tattered.
On an almost related note, can anyone confirm/deny a rumor? In the Roman Empire, one testified by placing one’s hand not on a bible but on one’s balls; perjury was punished by castration. Supposedly, that’s why “testify” and “testes” share a root. Snopes didn’t have much.

Absolutely compelling.
Amen.

I just love George Carlin, for so many reasons. I think I should add him to my list of “heroes” for his stance on free speech and civil liberties.

I second that!
I actually saw him when he was in Philly and other than losing his place a couple of times, he was pretty solid for a 70 year old.

Carlin’s the only comic I know of that continues pushing-pushing-pushing what people subscribe to as offensive. The mark of a fine comic.

Sure, works for me! 🙂

Fantastic stuff! I hope I’m still improving with age when I’m his age.
