I am a slave to my computer overlords

Did I say overlords? I meant protectors.

The company I work with has made a multimedia presentation that explains how our lightning detection gizmo works, and talks about storm and lightning safety and suchlike. It’s turned out to be a very effective sales tool, so we’ve made (or rather, I’ve made) several different versions of it for our various distributors, which feature the distributor’s logo and contact information, and safety information specific to whatever industry the distributor focuses on.

Last week, one of our distributors asked for 1,000 copies of their custom-tailored version of the presentation on CD-ROM. Now, we don’t have time (or, to be fair, money) to send it out for commercial CD duplication, and we don’t have a duplicator.

That means my last several days have been consumed creating CDs. I have a [MacPro computer] and a [Multimedia Presentation] and [1000 Blank No-Name CD-Rs], and I’m combining them into [1000 Multimedia CDs]. Man, I thought the quest line to get [Reins of the Onyx Netherwing Drake] was tedious!

So if anyone’s been wondering why I haven’t been around much lately, that’s the reason. On the whole, I think the grinding to get [Reins of the Onyx Netherwing Drake] is probably more satisfying.

  3. Too bad you didn’t say something sooner. I know a good small-run CD reproduction outfit that might have been within your company’s budget. A small printshop I worked at used them for a couple 500-1000 disc runs and they were great. I sleeved the discs myself (to save money, of course), but sleeving was certainly 100X less tedious than burning discs one at a time.

Not sure this will even get you a faction increase. PHBs tend to discount tedium for their minions.

    • It’s still worth a few ‘points’. If the analogy holds with the games
I’m familiar with, it will take several hundred similar tasks
completed before any perceptible change in attitude is evident.

  6. You need a friend who is broken on repetitive things like I am. Then you need to be willing to ask said friend to do such a thing. Because honestly? That sounds like fun.

  8. I highly recommend spending the first part of your weekend enslaving a third world country first. Then have them burn all the CD’s for their new overlord. Much less troublesome.

    • Much more paperwork, though. Do you have any idea how much paperwork Nike had to go through before they could start using child slaves to make tennis shoes? It’s a right mess, it is. And then there’s the logistics issues–import duties, shipping schedules, that sort of thing. Enslaving third-world countries just isn’t fun any more!

      • What is the world coming to when an evil overlord can’t just march his army into a third-world country and enslave them? I mean, really! Paperwork? For an overlord bent on world domination? Bah.

  12. I thought about getting a netherwing but instead have spent my time in battlegrounds to get the veterans gear for my priest. Well worth it, specially since this is an AV weekend.

  14. Next time let me know. Or if you’re not done yet. I do have an automated CD duplicator, and I’m in the Atlanta area. That’s a couple of plot coupons right there.

  16. No but you could ship them to me in MI and send me one with the whatever you’re burning on it and I could make a dent in that number you’re making.
