Well, i had a post ready to roll about the weekend’s interesting events, which include a trip to a gun show with friends (among other things), but it’ll have to wait. This evening, while I was eating popcorn, watching a movie on TV, and getting ready to post, my laptop failed. Suddenly, and quite without warning. The video hardware on the logic board has failed–I can still back up the laptop (and have been doing exactly that) using a FireWire cable, but the laptop itself is shot.
Since the laptop is vital to what I do for a living, I’m going to need to have it repaired or replaced. Depending on how expensive this is, it may mean I don’t go to San Francisco this January.
Suck.
I’m sorry to hear about your machine, I hope it can be easily repaired.
Thanks! I was able to recover the experimental version of you from the laptop, though… 🙂

Ibook
About 2 weeks ago I decided to send my iBook in for the logic board issue.
The good news:
1) After calling support they notified my that I would have to mail it in to a service center. (A local Apple store wouldn’t be able to accept it.) The box arrived the next day.
2) I was told that it would be about 5 to 6 weeks to get it back. The day after the service center received it, they updated the status to in progress.
3) The laptop was gone for a total (including travel) 5 business days.
Bad News:
1) With my problem (LCD dimming sporadically) they could not duplicate the issue and the logic board was not replaced.
2) The laptop looked as if it were reassembled by apes. The keyboard (easiest thing to install) was half out, and luckily didn’t gouge the LCD when the laptop was closed.
So Speedy on the service, but it looks as if someone rushed with my laptop. Hopefully your’s will get back t you as quickly, but with a more competent tech working on it.
Oh, and if your not talking about your iBook (which is what I assumed) disregard this whole thing… 8^)
Re: Ibook
Yep, it’s the iBook, and it’s had an intermittent screen-dimming issue for a couple of weeks. Sounds like the same problem you had, only more extreme.
If it’s gonna take six weeks to repair, I may end up having to get a new laptop, which would suck hefty moose willy. 🙁
Re: Ibook
Hey, is it a 700MHz iBook? If so, according to the Apple rep I spoke to this afternoon, Apple has an extended warranty recall for the video issue, and will replace the logic board free of charge. You have to make sure that the Apple tech looks up the computer’s serial number in their database to find the recall, though.
Re: Ibook
I had returned it in under logic board recall, but since the tech could not replicate the issue(in the 5 min he probably looked at it) they returned it in the same state it was. The issue hasn’t been as bad so maybe they reseated a connection to the LCD or something??
I’ve still got some time so if acts up again I’ll send it back in before the recall period is up.

Suck. 🙁 That does seem to be going around lately. Is there a recall for iBooks for this issue?
As a matter of fact, i just found out there is! Apple’s replacing my logic board free. 😀

Sorry to hear that. Mac World is important for what you do for a living also. Hope everything works out for you.
Hey, how are you doing? Recovering from your surgery?
I am doing well. I am trying to journal my progress. For me and all else who care. I would love to hear from you. Call me when you have some time.
