Since I have a diverse flist and I know a lot of you have all kinds of interesting skills and knowledge, and since I’m swamped with work at the moment and don’t have time to do the research…
Anyone see any inherent problems with using sex toys made of pure silver? As in, safety or health issues surrounding silver dildos or other insertables?
Some people have sensitivity to silver, which is why they can’t wear earrings made of anything except non-allergenic nickel plate or surgical stainless (my gf is a professional piercer). Sounds pretty, though, and of course it’d have to be polished lots…

LOL. That sounds extremely hot!!
However, there might be cause for concern…first from allergies, but I imagine anyone with an allergy knows it.
Second, I know different body chemistry’s react differently with silver… a metalsmit friend used to have to polish anything she touched because it turned the meatal black, whereas I can practicly polich silver with my hands.
I don’t know for certain, but I imagine that this might create problems in sensitive tissue…

I imagine such a toy would need to be cleaned and polished often. While gold is inert, reacts with few things, silver tarnishes easily.
But I don’t think there’s be anything unsafe about it. We put silver in our mouths at fancy events, so putting it in our other sensitive areas can’t be too bad.

Apart from what it does to the people, I’d be concerned with how long the silver would last. How does silver handle mild acids (I know you’re close to at least one chemist who could answer that)?

Barring allergy (as others have mentioned) I don’t think it would be an issue. I know that silver is actually slightly antibiotic, which is why all the colloidial silver bullshit gets a little traction.

Oh!!
And if it’s silver plate, it will, eventually, wear off, so allergy to whatever metal it covers is an issue as well.

I’d grab the nearest sterling set and a willing lady friend and try some insertion tests.. you’ll find the slight acidic environment of your ladyfriend’s bits to tarnish the silver easily, even after washing. Another factoid: pure silver ions are quite bacteriostatic and as such, might have the potential to change the natural balance of flora occurring in said lady’s bits. If it has to be silver, it would have to be coated with a polymer layer to prevent pure silver contact with nether-parts.
Gold would be an infinitely better choice.

if i had a choice i’d just lean towards the NJoy stuff instead of silver, and you know all about why. Easy to clean, don’t need to upkeep it like you do with silverware, and it’s pretty. I’ve had metal allergy/reactions before and it wasn’t pretty… open sores on my earlobes 🙁 Would hate to think what that would do to my more sensitive areas.
I love stainless steel, but the advantage of silver is that it allows you to make your own custom toys without a machine shop. There are silver making kits which allow you to mold a silver “clay” which, when fired, turns into pure silver; making custom toys from stainless steel requires a lot of equipment and machinery I don’t have.

This is the reason for the question: http://www.artclayworld.com/

fireable with a butane torch, can be layered over clay-cork so that the interior is hollow…..
The possibilities..ooh the possibilities.
The cork clay is designed for kilns, and is not recommended for use with torches. I believe it has to do with the way it burns off as the piece is fired.

Silver, if it is fairly pure will bend in your hand, especially with body heat; unless it is heavily alloyed, it will oxidize at an alarming rate. I would not want that to go into my girl. Finally, silver has a fairly wide grain to it, which is why it is soft. That will make it difficult to sterilize.
Pyrex glass is so nice and cleans and disinfects. And makes a lovely sex toy.
You got it — thanks! 🙂
Pyrex does make for lovely sex toys (most of my sweeties have Pyrex toys), but I’m looking for something that’s hard like glass or stainless steel but that can also be custom-made without a machine shop.

It is, in fact, difficult to get pure silver. What the impurities are makes a big difference in all the above.
I’d go with stainless if you were getting super chic.

In agreement with much/most of what has been said.
I’d also take into consideration the tolerance of the girl’s skin. Some girls, even without any sort of metal allergies, are extremely sensitive to the goings-on in their bits. Others are super sturdy. And there’s everything in-between. If she’s super prone to yeast infections or UTIs I’d not even consider it.

Barring someone getting beaten to death with it for spending so damn much money on a TOY?
Cheap if you buy the art clay. It *says* it’s non toxic. Well, not cheap, but 60 bucks, and you could design it yourself!
“non toxic” is not tested for insertion to genital areas. What they mean when they say “non toxic” is that you won’t get sick by being near it, normal handling, or a child putting it in his mouth. It doesn’t say anything about actually ingesting or inserting, which can have different reactions.
Exactly, which is why I’m trying to find out more info.
I’ve spent $500 on a sex toy (my first violet wand), so a toy made from silver would be a cakewalk by comparison.
Hey, the way I see it, some people spend that kind of dough on satellite TV packages. Now, me, I like sex more than I like American Idol or re-runs of Gilligan’s Island, so…
You’re talkin’ to a woman who does not have broadcast television, ya know.
‘Course I agree that sex toys are considerably more valuable than television.

Allergies. It depends entirely on the person. My ex had a long silver rope chain and heavy crucifix given to him; he wore it for one night. The next morning he had the cross and chain burned into his skin, and the backs of them, where they’d touched his skin, were black and pockmarked.

And make sure they’re not a vampire or a wereworlf.
I’m jus sayin…

Sterling has copper, which is where the tarnishing and most allergy concerns come from.
Actual fine silver, which contains no copper, should not have those problems.

I love silver, and 99.9% of the time will only wear silver-toned metal, not gold. Alas, I’m also one of those people who has to be careful about wearing silver wire/post earrings–I usually try to swap out the wires for surgical steel, and tend to simply avoid sterling silver post-type earrings. I don’t get sores on my ears, but it does tend to make them tender and irritated, and I suspect was a big part of why my first ear piercings ended up getting infected (had to let them close up and heal; didn’t try again for 4 years). Nearly 25 years later, though, I still have some troubles w/sterling silver, although only as earrings–necklaces, for example, are no problem at all. (Apparently this is something else I get from my paternal grandmother, who also had a hell of a time w/her pierced ears.)
Anyway, I was given to understand that the metal in sterling silver that was problematic was nickel, which a lot of people are allergic to–I’d never heard that copper was a problem, but I can see how it could be–and that surgical steel has neither nickel nor copper, which is why it’s non-allergenic (for most people, anyway).
Now, I’m no scientist, but I’m guessing that if sterling silver is problematic with 25-year-old ear piercings, which are quite definitely healed, it could definitely spell trouble when combined with girly bits, which contain a lot of sensitive mucous membranes and are rather acidic to boot. YMMV, of course, but I’d be inclined to stick with stainless or surgical steel if it’s the silver color you’re after. If you’re planning to cast your penis and make a reproduction out of ArtMetal, though, I suspect it would work better as an object d’art rather than an actual sex toy. Sorry about that…

Unrelatedly, but I’ve been meaning to ask — is there a way to tie a decent dildo harness? Or is that pretty much something that needs to be storebought?
I bet I could come up with one – give me some time and I’ll see what I can do (I’m a rigger in addition to rope-fetishist)
Awesome, thanks!
There is! Start with a knotted karada, tie a pair of extra knots right at the crotch in the front, slip the dildo through, bring the ropes around the thighs, wrap them around the base of the dildo…
Hmm. Maybe I should make a tutorial. It’s easier o show than to explain.
I’d love a tutorial! Thank you 🙂

hmmm
well if it’s for the vagina… vaginal fluid is fairly acidic. I’d be worried about the acid pitting the silver, making it difficult to clean properly.

Pure silver tarnishes blue, not black like more common sliver alloys. That said, I’m with everyone else here. Anything that tarnishes/oxidizes has to be a sanitation risk.

I’d personally want to avoid any toy of that nature made of silver.
My main concern would be long-term exposure and absorption of silver by the body and the possibility of it causing Argyria. Look up Paul Karason for an example of Argyria caused by ingestion and absorption of silver from Colloidal Silver solution.
A toy made of silver intended for e-stim use would be a particular concern. Colloidal Silver itself is created by running an electrical current though a silver electrode suspended in water. Running current though an e-stim toy made of silver would definitely cause migration of silver from the toy to the body/skin.
IMO, type 316 stainless steel would be a much safer (and less expensive!) material to use in this application. It can also be polished to a high gloss and won’t tarnish. The downside is that it wouldn’t be as easy to cast as silver, due to the higher melting temperature. However, if you are working with bar stock, it really wouldn’t be much more difficult to turn or mill with traditional tooling, though it is certainly a harder metal than silver.
An good example of type 316 stainless used in this application would be the njoy series of toys.
I love the NJoy toys. The advantage of silver is that it’s (relatively) easy to custom-make things from silver, whereas stainless requires access to a machine shop and a hydraulic press (to make things that curve). I;d like to custom-make hard toys, but I don’t have the equipment to work with stainless, Pyrex, or stone.

Besides what others have said, silver is hyper-conductive to heat and cold. Heat could potentially be dangergous, but playing with ice cubes via silver could be quite interesting.
Oooh, that does sound good! Make it hollow, with a chamber for ice…

Warning!!
Silver could be extremely dangerous and/or deadly if inserted in any play partner who happens to be lycanthropic!!!
Also any undead play partner may have terrible reactions, including but not limited to vampires, ghouls and ghasts… depending on their ethno-cultural mythological source derivation.
